The Best New Thing: Datomic

In the last few days I’ve bumped into a couple of people who asked me what all of the fuss about Datomic is about. For me, it just comes down to a few questions:

  • How would your life change if your database kept track of everything that happened, the complete history of the world, at least as far as that database was concerned? If you could just conjure up the state of your data as it was last week, or last month or last April 15th? All without lifting a finger?

  • How does your life change if you can start with last April’s data and say “What if I did this, not that?”, all without affecting the original?

  • How would your life change if you could do analysis on your data without gumming up the production system?

Check it out over at Datomic. I guess I should also mention that I biased since I a) Work for Relevance and b) Really like the people behind Datomic.

PS Did I mention that you can get rid of a lot of that nasty ORM layer in the process?
